Drea Cohane

Artist member since 2021
Pro
Toronto, Ontario

Drea is a visual artist who draws and paints from the city of Toronto. Due to a brain injury, Drea was inspired and motivated to take up art as a means of building new neural pathways. What started out as an effort to increase brain plasticity, has now become a lifelong creative endeavour.

Drea is fascinated by human nature; more specifically, by the interior lives we carry within us. These enigmatic inner landscapes are mostly kept hidden from a passerby, but will sometimes - and often fleetingly, reveal themselves in a passing gesture or look. In her portraits, Drea looks to capture a quality or expression through the use of colour and contour that distills something of the interior life of a person. Whether it's just a mere glimpse of what's going on under the surface, there is always an urgent sense of a passing mood playing out before the viewer.

Q+A

Best season of the year in Toronto

Autumn. I prefer the cooler weather, as well as the wonderful colour scheme that nature offers up at that time of the year.

Beverage of choice

Tea. I drink copious amounts throughout the day. White tea (Pai Mu Tan) is my current go-to.

Favourite musical artist / band right now

Blonde Redhead always, but I am also addicted to Lisa O'Neill's 'All Of This Is Chance' album.

Favourite artist(s) right now

Tina Berning, Anne-Sophie Tschiegg, Euan Uglow, Charlotte Salomon, Egon Schiele, Lucien Freud and Helene Schjerfbeck.

How long have you been creating art?

I used to paint and sell abstracts in my twenties. The pandemic + mTBI inspired me to take up art again. I couldn't draw to save my life, so learning portraits has been a huge learning curve for me. I still have so much to learn, and am excited to hone this new skill-set.

Favourite medium

Watercolour and Gouache.
